Gluten-Free, Organic, Scottish Porridge Oats, 500g

Oatmeal of Alford

Alford Gluten Free Range is made with 100% Pure Scottish Oats.

The oats are grown and harvested on the family farm in Aberdeenshire and milled at Montgarrie Mill before every batch is rigourously gluten free tested to make sure they are safe for coeliacs. Their traditional methods of milling give the oats a wonderful nutty flavour.

The addition of gluten free oats to the diet can provide welcomed variety and also provide many proven health benefits. Alford gluten free oatmeal can be used in everyday recipes, from porridge in the morning, to homemade bread, delicious afternoon cakes and muffins and so much more.

Storage & Prep

Ingredients: Gluten Free, Organic Scottish Porridge Oats.

Meet the Producer: Oatmeal of Alford

One of the oldest working watermills in Scotland, Montgarrie Mill is the home of Oatmeal of Alford. The Medlock family grow the oats on the family farm at Mains of Haulkerton, Laurencekirk which is a fully organic farm. Oats have always been the main crop, however, nowadays; this is shared with free range chickens and a rotation of potatoes, wheat and grass. They are then dried and graded on the farm before being delivered to Montgarrie Mill, where the oats are turned into a very traditional product that we can enjoy at ny time of night or day.

Montgarrie Mill's long history

Many mills were set up by monasteries and local lairds, and run on their behalf by artisan millers. In fact, the base course of the current mill at Montgarrie is actually part of a previous mill that dates back to Jacobite times, although legend has it that there’s been a mill on the Esset burn since the Bishop of Aberdeen built one in 1317.

One of the most impressive features of Montgarrie Mill is its water wheel, one of the most striking in the country: an overshot bucket wheel which measures 24 feet in diameter and is four feet broad. It has 10 spokes, it weighs 21 tons, and was made in 1886 by James Abernethy’s foundry in Aberdeen.

Several generations of McDonald family worked the Montgarrie Mill, from their purchase in 1894, to financial straits in 1998, when John and Carol Medlock took over. Today, the mill employs two millers, Gwen Williamson and Richie Duncan, and is the last commercial meal mill operated in the traditional way: the process has remained constant for over a century.

And the end product? Now packaged in polythene sacks rather than hessian bags, it’s called the Oatmeal of Alford rather than Montgarrie oatmeal because Alford was the closest railway station, hence a better-known departure point. From Alford, the oatmeal travelled out into the wider world: today it’s stocked by dozens of outlets in the North-East; rather fewer once you reach the Central Belt; but almost none south of the Border.
