Verdant Dry Gin, 70cl

Verdant Drinks Co., Dundee

GIN OF THE YEAR 2017, SCOTTISH GIN AWARDS
GOLD 2017, THE SPIRITS BUSINESS AWARDS

Verdant gin is distilled in small batches from the highest quality ingredients in their 500 litre pot still “Little Eddie”. It is aromatically juniper-led with fresh notes of citrus on the nose and palate with warm, earthy undertones of spice. Their carefully curated blend of botanicals was inspired by Dundee’s rich trading history and reflects the routes once sailed by traders to and from the city.

These characteristics make it perfect served neat (on the rocks or not) or as a G&T with your favourite tonic - and, bottled at 43% ABV, it has plenty of of character to hold its own when used in the skilled mixologist’s hands, where it adds a subtle depth and vitality to both new and traditional cocktail creations.

Botanicals: Juniper, Coriander seed, Bitter Orange, Lemon Peel, Cassia Bark, Orris Root, Green Cardamom, Angelica, Liquorice, Grains of Paradise.

Alc. Volume: 43%

The Botanicals

Juniper : The key flavouring in gin, a strongly aromatic berry with a resinous pine note. The name “gin” comes from the Dutch juniper-based spirit “genever” then shortened over the years to “gin”. Verdant source it from the Baltic countries – a nod to Dundee’s whaling past.

Coriander Seed : A fragrant spice with a hint of orange, grown in India. Coriander tempers the bitter elements in this gin, balancing the final flavour.

Lemon Peel : The intense flavour of lemon hides in the peel and is released into the gin during distillation. Mediterranean lemons found their way to Dundee via trading links with Spain and Portugal.

Bitter Orange : How could a gin from Dundee, the home of marmalade, not have a hint of bitter orange? Seville orange peel adds a dry, bitter citrus note widely used in orange liqueurs.

Cassia Bark : One of the oldest recorded spices to come from Asia, and similar in taste to cinnamon but stronger. Small amounts add an earthy sweetness giving a complex base note and long finish.

Orris Root : This iris species is widely grown in Hungary and the Baltic area, smells of violets, but gives a soft bitterness to our gin.

Green Cardamom : Originally from India, with a unique flavour and aroma. It is unmistakably perfumed - sweet and warm with a fresh hint of eucalyptus.

Angelica : A tiny addition of the dried root of this plant adds an earthy, musky note for balance as well as adding a herbal note to the aroma. Grown in the Baltic area and Asia, it is widely used in vermouth, absinthe and aniseed aperitifs.

Liquorice : Widely grown in Turkey, this natural bitter-sweet flavouring is found in the dried root of a plant related to the pea, and imparts a delicate sweet aniseed note to our gin. It has been highly valued for its soothing health benefits and large quantities have been discovered in Egyptian tombs.

Grains of Paradise: Grains of paradise were discovered by spice traders in West Africa in the 13th century before being brought to the UK, where they were used as a seasoning before black pepper was brought to Europe. Small quantities bring a bring a peppery spiciness with a hint of ginger to our gin.

Meet the Producer: Verdant Drinks Co., Dundee

Verdant Gin: Gin of the Year 2017

After gaining a post-grad MSc in Food & Drink Innovation, where the seed of the distillery idea was first planted, Verdant Drinks Co. founder Andrew was further fuelled to make the dream a reality. There’s a been a great deal of thought gone into the design and choice of their distillation equipment and processes. Andrew decided early on to stick to the ethos and heritage that comes from his Scottish location.

Based in a former engine house of one of Dundee’s old mills that housed some of the most cutting edge machinery of its day, Andrew followed in this history of innovation in opting for one of the new generation of stills – a 500 litre iStill. Not perhaps the prettiest, but a still that simply performs the best possible job for the production of the best possible spirits. After many years of working in Formula 1, Andrew learned to appreciate the importance of focussing on the end result, and using the best tools to achieve it. So, he use traditional methods, mixed with modern technology, and an attention to detail to create what we believe to be a truly luxurious dry gin.

Verdant Drinks Co. wins awards for a reason and we are delighted to be stocking Verdant Dry Gin for UK wide delivery at Fresh Food Express.
