North Street Dairy, the Last of its Kind

Do you remember how delicious fresh milk poured from a glass bottle was? What about the sweet cream from the top of the milk bottle (which caused many early morning arguments in our house)?

Unfortunately these happy memories are now a thing of the past. Due to commercial pressures, UK dairy farming is increasingly moving towards US-style mega-dairies, with the loss of small traditional ones.

However, we were overjoyed to discover a tiny artisan dairy that completely embodies Fresh Food Express' 3Ts values; Taste, Tradition and Traceability. North Street Dairy in the market town of Forfar in Angus is a fourth generation dairy that's been quietly working away for the last 100 years. From his tiny croft within Forfar, William Hebenton started his dairy, and 100 years on, it's still being run by his family. Today, his great grandson, Hamish Miller, together with sister Alison, and parents Aileen and Norman run the dairy from the same location at Forfar.

From Cow to Cuppie in 24hrs

Their own herd of free range dairy cows, who grazed in fields on the outskirts of the town, were milked onsite, and the raw milk was processed at the dairy in the centre of the town. The advent of strict health legislation regarding milk pasteurization in the 1970s, meant the family could no longer use their own cows' milk as they transported the milk to their dairy in cans. As a consequence, the raw milk that they now use is from nearby Baldoukie Farm in Tannadice is now delivered by tanker and processed at the dairy.

Unless you live in Forfar or surrounding area, you'll never have the opportunity to enjoy North Street Dairy's traditional glass bottled milk. However, regardless of where you're based in the UK, you can now enjoy the dairy's milk in the form of their delicious handmade butter!

Rich golden butter made with North Street Dairy's fresh cream, has authenticity at its heart. From their dairy kitchen, Aileen and Alison make pats of their butter with traditional wooden butter paddles in the same way generations before them did.

We are delighted to be working directly with this artisan family-run business. North Street Dairy are the last of their kind in the East of Scotland. If you value traditional local produce, please support these tiny dairy artisans by buying their exceptional handmade Scottish butter.
