Peasemeal (Brosemeal)

Produced in a Traditional Water Mill, Golspie Mill

Available in 1kg or 3kg pack

Peasemeal is a highly versatile, healthy and nutritious food used since Roman times and growing again in popularity.
This product is unique to Golspie Mill where it is made from roasted yellow field peas milled through three sets of mill stones to produce a fine yellow flour.
Traditionally used for making peasemeal brose (adding meal to boiling milk or water with a knob of butter and seasoning to taste) and for pea scones and bannocks, it has many quick innovative modern uses and can be used as a crispy coating for fish or chicken
Adds a lovely flavour to white sauces, and makes very healthy vegetarian pate.
The production of Peasemeal disappeared in the 1970s until it was revived by a producer due to an increased demand within the Highland regions. Popularity in this product is slowly increasing.

Peasemeal Recipes

RECIPE: Tomato & Garlic Pate

Mix a tablespoonful of peasemeal with boiling water to form a thick paste, stir in sun-dried tomato puree, a clove of crushed garlic and salt and black pepper to taste. There you have it!

Note: Vary the flavours with chopped herbs like basil or coriander or rosemary, or add a nip with chilli or Tabasco; add pesto, smoked fish, roasted garlic, fresh chillies - the list goes on and on. Great with tacos, toast, crackers or in sandwiches with loads of salad.

RECIPE: Ellie Morrison's Cheesy Fingers

Ingredients
4oz (110g) Peasemeal
1 pint water or half/half with milk
1oz (25g) strong cheese such as parmesan
seasoning

Method
Boil the liquid in a pan, remove from the heat and stir in the meal until you have a smooth porridge.
Return to a medium heat and continue to beat for about 5 minutes. Add the cheese and season to taste. Pour into a shallow tin and leave in the fridge for an hour to set. Turn out and cut into fingers, brush lightly with oil and grill on both sides until crisp and golden.

Meet the Producer: Golspie Mill

Traditional water mill producing delicious biscuits and flours

Golspie Mill, in Sutherland in the north of Scotland, is one of very few traditional water-powered mills remaining in production in Scotland. Built in 1863 as an estate meal mill, it was fully restored in 1992 and has been producing specialist meals and flours using traditional methods (and renewable energy!) ever since.

Many of the products are organic and wholesome, all ground to the highest standard, and all of them are entirely free from additives and made with pure, milled whole grains and pulses. One of their specialities, that we love I should add, is beremeal, Golspie Mill is a member of the Traditional Corn Millers Guild, a guild of artisan millers, open only to those using traditional methods to produce flours and meals.

Golspie Mill work in collaboration with Reids of Caithness, an award winning family bakery to bake using the flour they produce, producing delectable baked goods to showcase the flavourful flours ground at the mill.
We are delighted to offer Golspie Mill biscuits and flours for UK-wide delivery via Fresh Food Express online.

Life is far too short to be waiting in for deliveries so we have 3 convenient delivery options for you:

1. We Can Deliver to Your Work Place

Just add your work address to the delivery address section and add any special instructions like “Tell Dotty on reception to keep her paws off my goodies”.

2. We Can Leave in a Safe Place at Your Home

Just let us know in the Delivery Instructions where you’d like us to leave your box. Our cheery couriers are experts in deliveries to sheds and garages. Somewhere cool and dark is best. Most of our customers choose this option and you must give us a safe place to leave your goods if we are delivering to your home address.

3. We Can Deliver to Your Neighbours

“Neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours”. Do you have a good neighbour who would give a home to your fresh box? Perfect, just let us know in the Delivery Instructions. Goods can are best left in their box until you collect them from your neighbour.

Change of Plan and you won’t be around on the day of delivery?

Don’t worry, we’ll text you the day before delivery and 2 hours before delivery where you have the option to make changes to your original delivery. You can also speak to an actual human being (novel, I know), where we’ll be happy to help (call Jillian on 01241 830693).
